Aga Khan Academy, Nairobi - Junior School participates in Junior Speakers Tournament
On 25 February 2023, Grade 4 and 5 students at the Aga Khan Academy (AKA), Nairobi - Junior School a part of the debate team participated in the Junior Speakers Tournament organised by the African Debate Academy, which was held at the Light International School - Karen, Nairobi.
The tournament aims to help students learn, showcase their knowledge, communicate and participate in competitive debates and public speaking-related activities. For this year, AKA, Nairobi - Junior School participated in debates, spelling bees, quizzes and public speaking competitions.
“It was such a great experience since I was able to participate and learn about debating in a tournament and showcase my knowledge,” said Kimberly Chebet, a Grade 5 student.
In preparation for the tournament, the students were involved in rigorous training, incorporating the different approaches to learning during their presentations which included self-management, communication and social and research skills. In the end, AKA, Nairobi - Junior School students came in second place and won a trophy. The students also earned individual medals for their sterling performance in the debate, spelling bee and quiz tests, and public speaking categories.
“My experience in the quiz tests and spelling bees was good,” said Swara Yadav, a Grade 4 student. “It was my first time in such a competition, and I really enjoyed it.”
