Aga Khan Nursery School, Nairobi donates to local daycare centres
Students and parents at the Aga Khan Nursery School (AKNS), Nairobi donated non-perishable food items, stationery items, diapers and clothing to three daycare centres in collaboration with Tiny Totos, an organisation that aims to enhance informal daycare centres into profitable, professional daycare centres.
To collect funds, the students – with support from their parents – organised various fundraising initiatives at AKNS, Nairobi, such as a bake sale.
“This initiative began last year with a simple Christmas celebration party where people could donate money,” said Headteacher of AKNS, Nairobi Waseem Khawaja. “Since then it has transformed into a much bigger activity.”
The donated items were delivered to the Mwammko Rescue Centre, Sidon Children’s Home and Aphila Childrens’ Home on 23 November, with His Excellency Nairobi County Governor Johnson Sakaja also attending the handover event and donating funds that will be used to purchase additional items for the centres. Impressed by the donations, Governor Sakaja commended AKNS, Nairobi and emphasised the need for schools and counties to work together and support each other.
In addition to this, AKNS, Nairobi hosted a joint team-building activity for its staff and 30 staff members from these daycare centres on 30 November and will continue initiatives such as these to improve the quality of life of people in the local community.
