Teacher appreciation at the Aga Khan Education Service, Tanzania
On 7 September 2024, teachers from the Aga Khan Education Services (AKES), Tanzania gathered for an unforgettable day trip to Morogoro.
The event was organised to celebrate the dedication and hard work of the teaching community. It also served as an opportunity for development with team-building activities, fostering a stronger and more cohesive community for the new academic year. Aboard the eco-friendly electric Standard Gauge Railway (SGR), teachers from the Aga Khan Nursery and Primary School, Dar es Salaam and the Aga Khan Mzizima Secondary School, Dar es Salaam came together for the occasion.
The morning unfolded at the Morogoro Hotel, where teachers participated in a lively quiz to refine their knowledge of AKES, Tanzania’s mission, values and actions. It was a perfect opportunity to get acquainted with new colleagues, as both seasoned staff and recent recruits were mixed into teams to enhance cohesion and collaboration.
After a shared lunch, the afternoon offered a range of outdoor activities in Morogoro. Teachers could choose between exploring the famous Rock Garden with its scenic nature trail or relaxing by the pool at the hotel, among other options. The choice of activities allowed smaller groups to form, giving the teachers a chance to strengthen bonds with their peers in a more relaxed setting.
"From having a dedicated SGR cabin to visiting iconic landmarks in Morogoro and competing in the quiz, the day trip created a wonderful opportunity for the academic faculty to engage with one another beyond the classroom," said Shehzeen Sunderji, the curriculum enhancement coordinator for AKES, Tanzania.
This brief getaway was also a chance to celebrate collective successes and acknowledge the crucial work teachers do daily. Their dedication has been reflected in the outstanding performance of students this year.
The school community across AKES, Tanzania is united by a shared mission. Educators across all campuses collaborate to offer the best for students, parents and the broader community.
“The trip was an incredible experience, giving me the chance to connect with colleagues and friends in a new setting,” said Luis Alejandro Cid Guzman, the Primary Years Programme teacher lead for the Primary School. “Our busy school days often leave us with little time for such moments. Experiences like these are valuable and refreshing.”
