Aga Khan High School, Mombasa participates in national entrepreneurial competition
On 14 July, students and teachers at the Aga Khan High School (AKHS), Mombasa began participating in the Wavumbuzi Entrepreneurial Challenge, with the school ranking number 6 nationally and number 1 in Mombasa county.
“Wavumbuzi” is a Kiswahili word referring to discoverers or innovators, with this online programme aiming to equip high school and junior secondary students with research and entrepreneurial skills. The challenge takes place over six weeks with students and teachers taking part in weekly quizzes, essays and peer reviews, as well as an entrepreneurial competition.
Students prepared for the challenges through training conducted by AKHS, Mombasa’s Wavumbuzi School Coordinator Stephen Mativo, which took place during the “Wavumbuzi Daily Hour” from 4 to 5 pm (EAT). Each student answered questions in a portal by researching online, giving their individual opinions and collaborating with others.
Although this was AKHS, Mombasa’s first time participating in the programme, three students from Form 4, 2 and 3, Dino Mbole, Rahil Ridhwan and Abdalla Ali, respectively, will be recognised for their exemplary performance nationally in a ceremony at the Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD) in Nairobi. Additionally, Form 4 student Dino Mbole and Form 1 student Yash Shivraj ranked in the top 20 national category for two consecutive weeks.
“I am excited to have been given the opportunity to participate in the challenge and the achievement I have received so far,” said Dino.
Wavumbuzi organisers will follow-up with the winners after they have completed school and enrol them into an incubation programme in Rwanda for three months, with full sponsorship.
“The programme has had our learners improve in the following areas – critical thinking, problem-solving, research and time management,” said Mr Stephen Mativo, the school’s Wavumbuzi coordinator and the head of the Kiswahili department at AKHS, Mombasa, who was selected to attend the national awards ceremony in Nairobi for his exemplary performance. “I am confident that these students in the future will become great innovators and job creators in Kenya and the entire world.”
