Health Week at the Aga Khan Nursery School, Mombasa
From 11-14 October 2022, the Aga Khan Nursery School, Mombasa participated in a Health Week with the Aga Khan Hospital, Mombasa (AKHS, Mombasa).
During this week, the students learned about health and hygiene and engaged in some fun activities that taught them how to maintain a healthy lifestyle. The first day kicked off with a talk on the importance of hand washing which was done by Dr Irfan and his team from the Aga Khan Hospital, Mombasa. The students were taught how to effectively wash their hands, which they practised on themselves using soap and water. It was a very informative day with a lot of learning taking place.
The next day began with a nutrition talk from Dr Philip from AKHS, Mombasa. Dr Philip spoke to both the teachers and the students on how to maintain a good diet that will make us healthier and more able to learn. They learned about how the relationship between nutrition, health and learning is undeniably strong.
On Thursday, 13 October, there was a dental checkup for both students and teachers. It was a fun-filled morning as the students were very excited learning about how good oral hygiene is essential because it leads to a healthy lifestyle. The day was crowned with dental screenings by Dr Halima from AKHS, Mombasa, who gave recommendations to parents for children who needed further referral.
Health Week ended with the School marking World Food Day. Teachers, students and parents began a community service initiative of collecting non-perishable food items which will be given to an orphanage. As the activities from the previous days for Health Week focused on the importance of taking care of yourself, this community service initiative was the perfect way to end the week as it taught the students the importance of taking care of others in our community as well.
