“Mom’s are like buttons – they hold everything together”

Mother’s day is celebrated around the world to honor motherhood and the value mothers add to our everyday lives. The earliest records we have of a festival for motherhood was by the Greeks to mark the importance of their goddesses. Modern day moves to recognise mothers began in the 1900’s in America by one woman who wanted to show her appreciation of her own mom. Today mother’s day celebrations have spread to all regions of the world.
Contemporary celebrations see sons and daughters taking their mom out for a meal, having a family get together or pampering mom for the day. This year has been different. Social distancing as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic has meant families can’t celebrate together as they have previously. In response the Aga Khan Nursery School, Dar-es Salaam teachers decided to recognise mothers with a special virtual message. “This message reminded our moms just how important they are to their families and to the community at large. All the moms were so touched by these messages”, said Erem Kassam, Early Years Coordinator for the Nursery. “Next year may we all celebrate in person.”
