Aga Khan Mzizima Secondary School, Dar es Salaam students participate in Tanzania Women Engineers Convention and Exhibition
On 21 and 22 August 2024, six students from the Aga Khan Mzizima Secondary School, Dar es Salaam had the opportunity to participate in the ninth Tanzania Women Engineers Convention and Exhibition (TAWECE) at the Julius Nyerere International Convention Centre in Dar es Salaam.
The event, organised by the Institution of Engineers Tanzania – Women Chapter, aims to empower women in engineering and encourage young girls to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). The school was represented by Form 1 and 3 students, Malak Dhiyebi, Moza Jumbe, Narmeen Rashid, Natalia Deule, Kemilembe Dickson and Hyasinta Muhode. Selected for their enthusiasm and commitment to science and engineering, the students spent weeks preparing innovative projects, with the guidance and support of their teacher, focusing on sustainable engineering solutions. The projects included a solar-powered water distiller, which utilises solar energy to purify water, offering a sustainable and environmentally friendly solution to water scarcity issues; and an automatic model of solar-powered streetlights, which will promote eco-friendly solar energy in public infrastructure.
The convention helped inspire and motivate women engineers and students to take advantage of professional growth opportunities available to them. It emphasised the importance of creating a future of hope for women and young girls by helping them build skills, empowering them and providing resources to foster an interest in STEM subjects.
“Attending the TAWECE with a focus on sustainability was a game-changer,” Malak, a Form Three student, said. “It was incredible to witness how innovative solutions are being designed with our planet in mind and to connect with like-minded women who are driving the future of green engineering.”
The participation of the school in the convention was a remarkable opportunity to nurture the students’ passion for engineering and sustainability. It not only opened their eyes to the world of possibilities within STEM but also inspired them to continue pursuing their interests in engineering.
By connecting with professionals and peers who share their passion for green engineering, these students are one step closer to becoming the future of innovation and sustainability in Tanzania.
