AKMSSMUN (Model United Nations)
Dar-es-Salaam, Tanzania – Once a year, AKMSSMUN (Model United Nations) delegates are given the opportunity to attend an international conference. This year, we attended The Hague International Model United Nations (THIMUN), the biggest conference in the world for secondary school students to come together and discuss major world issues. It is a five-day simulation of the United Nations, which takes place in the World Forum Convention Centre, The Hague in the Netherlands, at the end of January every year. More than 3,200 delegates from over 200 countries attend the conference.

Seven students proudly represented Aga Khan Mzizima Secondary School: MaahirJusabani, the Ambassador; Zahra Tejani, Yogesh Mundhra, JinalSomani, Christopher Aris, Yamen Haydar and Sayed Qadri, along with the MUN Director Ms. Hetal Chandaria.

The team arrived at The Hague on January 23rd, 2016 and the conference began the following morning. Committees were formed and students began participating in lobbying activities. The next four days consisted of heated, yet fruitful debates on key issues of world politics. These included women’s rights, housing and property, the effects of armed conflicts on treaties, refugees in the Mediterranean, and threats to stability and security. Solutions for these problems were developed and articulated by delegates.

With majority of the resolutions passing, it was definitely an extremely productive week. The Aga Khan Mzizima students were able to showcase their skills and knowledge and represent the school on an international platform.  It was truly an experience of a lifetime.
