04 April 2024

Ms Nazia Qureshi, Class of 1997 from the Diamond Jubilee High School for Girls, Mumbai, is now a secondary teacher at the school. She reflects on her teaching journey and the impact of the school.

My journey at the school began when I joined the nursery class at the age of 3.

Over the span of 22 years, the school became an integral part of my life. Fond memories from my school days include participation in various competitions, annual events, sports activities as well as engaging excursions and trips. Among the influential figures during my years at the school, Ms Vardah Roghay, who has since retired from her role as principal, played a pivotal role in shaping my personality. Equally as significant is Ms Melissa Maria, a teacher whose influence greatly contributed to my decision to pursue teaching as a career.

Following the completion of Grade 12, I pursued a diploma in education and joined the school in 2001 as a teaching assistant in the secondary section. Concurrently, I pursued my higher education, obtaining a Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts in history. Additionally, I acquired a diploma in school leadership and management. Ms Vardah’s encouragement constantly motivated me to pursue advanced educational endeavours.

One of the most rewarding aspects of teaching at the Diamond Jubilee High School for Girls, Mumbai is the freedom for teachers to be creative and employ innovative teaching and learning methods to spark a student's curiosity. The school's management provides opportunities for professional development, enabling teachers to contribute meaningfully to the holistic development of their students.
