Meet our alumni: Ms Zelam Indulkar
Ms Zelam Indulkar is a Class of 1996 alumna from the Diamond Jubilee High School for Girls (DJHSG), Mumbai. Currently a mathematics and science teacher at the Diamond Jubilee High School (DJHS), Mumbai, Ms Zelam reflects on her journey from student to educator.
My journey from being a student at DJHSG, Mumbai to a teacher at DJHS, Mumbai serves as a living example of the transformative opportunities the school provides. My story illustrates how a nurturing educational environment can shape and empower young individuals to emerge as influential educators.
During my student years, I discovered a passion for science and actively participated in inter-school science exhibitions. Encouraged by the school's holistic approach to development, I participated in various extracurricular activities. In 1995, I had the honour of serving as the school's sports captain. I also seized opportunities to participate in dance, singing, elocution and drawing competitions.
I completed my Secondary School Certificate (SSC) in 1996, benefitting greatly from the mentorship of my teachers, including Ms Vardah Roghay, Ms Nazli Khan, Ms Janhavi Karambelkar, Ms Sushma Sharma, Ms Swati Yerandekar and the late Ms Medha J Veerkar, who helped lay a strong foundation. After graduating with honours from Wilson College, I pursued a degree in education at the Government of Maharashtra Secondary Training College, where I achieved a first. Motivated by my desire to impart the same wonderful education I received, I returned to DJHS, Mumbai as a teacher.
In 2015, I joined DJHS, Mumbai, within the Aga Khan Education Service, India portfolio of schools, where I currently serve as a mathematics and science teacher in the secondary section and the head of the biology department. Every day, I witness firsthand how young minds are nurtured and given the opportunity to develop critical thinking and leadership skills, encapsulating the school's commitment to empowering students to become forward-thinking individuals who contribute positively to society.
