Inspiring diplomacy and global citizenship at the Diamond Jubilee High School, Hyderabad
The Diamond Jubilee High School, Hyderabad hosted an exhilarating inter-school Model United Nations (MUN) conference on 2 and 3 December 2023. The event brought together passionate and articulate students from various schools across the city to engage in diplomatic discourse and foster a deeper understanding of global issues.
The school’s campus served as the backdrop for the event, creating an environment conducive for intellectual exchange and collaboration. Delegates assumed the roles of ambassadors and representatives of different nations, addressing real-world issues within the framework of the United Nations. The diverse range of agendas provided a platform for students to tackle pressing issues, encouraging them to think critically and propose practical solutions.
“Hosting the inter-school MUN was a defining moment, echoing our dedication to academic excellence and fostering future leaders,” said Dr Sujatha Gade, the principal of the school. “It illuminated our school community's collaborative spirit, underscoring students' capacity to contribute meaningfully to global discussions on peace, security and development.”
The heart of any MUN conference lies in its debates; this event was no exception. Delegates engaged in dynamic discussions, presenting well-researched perspectives and collaborating to draft resolutions addressing the challenges. The atmosphere was charged with intellectual energy as diplomats negotiated, debated and sought common ground.
"Participating in the MUN allowed me to step into the shoes of world leaders and diplomats,” said Lizna Charania, a Grade 10 student. “It made me realise the complexity of international relations and the importance of finding diplomatic solutions to complex issues."
The event's highlight was the keynote address delivered by the chief guest, Director of the Aga Khan Education Service, India and Convener of the school, Mr Noordin Dhamani. He shed light on the importance of diplomacy, global cooperation and the role of the youth in shaping the future. The insightful speech inspired the delegates to approach the conference with renewed vigour and a sense of responsibility.
To recognise the exceptional contributions of the delegates, awards were presented in various categories, including “Best Delegate”, “Outstanding Delegate” and “Honourable Mention”. These awards also highlighted the collective efforts of the schools in fostering diplomatic skills. The event ended with a grand closing ceremony and participants reflecting on their experiences, celebrating the friendships they formed during the event.
