The Sultan Mahomed Shah Aga Khan School, Karachi installs a new solar panel system
The Sultan Mahomed Shah Aga Khan School, Karachi has recently installed three solar panels to help to produce electricity for the school, thanks to the generous support of alumni from the class of 1970. Many of the donations were made in memory of the loved ones of alumni. This new solar panel system will not only reduce the school’s dependency on the city’s electricity grid, but will also aid the Aga Khan Education Service (AKES), Pakistan in meeting its key environmental goal of reducing the carbon footprint of the Aga Khan Schools.
Students at the Sultan Mahomed Shah Aga Khan School switched on the new green system at a celebratory event that was attended by the principals of its school and principals of the neighbouring Aga Khan Higher Secondary School, Karachi. School teachers and members of staff were also in attendance, in addition to members of the AKES, Pakistan senior management team.
Speaking at the occasion, Mr Rahim Areshia, Chief Financial Officer at AKES, Pakistan, expressed the organisation’s commitment to playing its part in working towards a greener future: “All our new facilities are being designed as green buildings with solar panels and insulated building materials to ensure minimal energy consumption and carbon footprint. And, our existing facilities are being renovated and retrofitted to achieve the same goals.”
Mustafa, a class 9 student at the school, explained that initiatives such as these are valuable as part of students’ learning: “I feel proud that my school is future-driven and taking the initiative to switch to more sustainable sources of energy. Not only is it a great example for other schools, it is an important lesson for us that climate change is a threat to our planet and we need to take practical steps to counter it.”
Additionally, solar panels have been installed in three other schools: the Aga Khan Higher Secondary School, Karachi, the Aga Khan School, Garden and the Aga Khan School, Kharadhar.
These six solar panels will reduce the carbon footprint of the Aga Khan Schools in Karachi by 32 tonnes a year and cut electricity costs by up to fifty per cent. This initiative is a great example of the many ways former students of Aga Khan Schools are giving back to their alma mater and helping to educate a new generation of students.
