On 28 April 2023, the Sultan Mahomed Shah Aga Khan School, Karachi transformed into a hub of environmental enthusiasm as the school celebrated Earth Day with a profound commitment to sustainability. This special occasion was more than just a date on the calendar; it marked a pivotal moment for over 1,200 pre-primary students who actively engaged in activities aimed at fostering environmental consciousness.

Guided by the principles of the four “R’s” in sustainability – reduce, reuse, recycle and rebuy – the students embraced a holistic approach to responsible living. From opting for tap water instead of bottled alternatives to infusing creativity into recycled art projects, the school premises resonated with the spirit of environmental stewardship.

“I love gardens and parks on the Earth, not the trash,” said Ahil Ali from the pre-primary Class 3. “Let's keep our planet green!”

Recycling bins adorned the school, providing a tangible reminder of the significance of waste segregation. The introduction of “rebuy” as part of the four “R’s” was met with excitement, as students explored consignment and thrift stores for clothing, embracing the idea of sustainable consumerism.

The day's activities extended beyond theoretical understanding, incorporating hands-on experiences across cognitive, physical and emotional domains. Students actively participated in critical thinking exercises on environmental issues, engaged in physical activities, like creating recycled seed balls, and embraced the emotional dimension through caring for plants.

“Where will I live if there's trash all over the Earth?” said Zehra Nassem from the pre-primary Class 3. “The Earth is our home, and we should keep it clean.”

The Earth Day celebration at the Sultan Mahomed Shah Aga Khan School, Karachi was a collective effort to sow the seeds of sustainability. The Aga Khan Education Service (AKES), Pakistan finds pride in nurturing a generation that not only celebrates Earth Day but actively contributes to building a greener and more sustainable future.
