Fostering early literacy approaches with a child-centred approach at the Aga Khan School, Sidhpur
On 19 August 2023, the Aga Khan School (AKS), Sidhpur organised an event called “Jolly Phonics”, with the aim of nurturing early literacy skills among pre-primary students. “Jolly Phonics” is a systematic approach to teaching children to read and write using synthetic phonics.
Designed to introduce children to the sounds of letters through an interactive and child-centred approach, the event included various engaging activities, such as interactive games, an informative presentation and classroom tasks invoking the students’ creativity.
With a buzz of enthusiasm on the premises as parents arrived, the Principal of AKS, Sidhpur, Mr Chandan Sharma, extended a warm welcome to everyone. His words emphasised the importance of nurturing early literacy skills and highlighted the school’s commitment to providing a nurturing and comprehensive educational environment.
A significant part of the event was an informative presentation elucidating the essence of Jolly Phonics and its significance in early childhood education. The presentation, skilfully delivered by Mrs Bindia Rishi, the section head and Mrs Bijal Khamar, an early years educator, offered parents a deeper understanding of the methodology and rationale behind cultivating early literacy skills.
Following the presentation, a variety of dynamic classroom activities were conducted. For the nursery students, activities involved clay and salt for a tactile and sensory learning experience. The lower Kindergarten students explored the world of phonics with salt and bubble maps, fostering creativity and association. Lastly, the upper Kindergarten students experienced enriching and encompassing tasks, like blending three-letter words, onset rhyme exercises and tricky word challenges.
One of the highlights of the event was an action song performed by the students. Their vibrant rendition of the classic children’s song “If You’re Happy and You Know It, Clap Your Hands” added a burst of energy, captivating both children and parents.
“This was quite an interesting gathering that took place at the school to demonstrate how to teach students with the help of an outstanding approach called ‘Jolly Phonics’,” said Kumari Priya Sinha, a parent of a Kindergarten student at the school. “This technique helps improve confidence and enhances social skills in children. We are delighted to be a part of this programme and look forward to participating in similar events in the future.”
