The students participated in a variety of fun activities, including creating slogans about the importance of literacy in our daily lives. They also sang songs about the importance of reading, writing and communicating in English and Kiswahili at a special school assembly. Marching around the school singing and celebrating was another enjoyable activity for both teachers and students.

Activities continued in the classroom as students took part in buddy reading, storytelling and show and tell sessions. The day concluded with Drop Everything and Read (DEAR) time. The children were overjoyed to realise that letters are everywhere, and that literacy is all about learning.

"I learnt a new word, literacy, which means knowing how to read, write and communicate," said Kindergarten 3 student Ansh Kanabar.

By celebrating International Literacy Day, the Aga Khan Nursery School, Mombasa joined the global effort to support United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation’s (UNESCO) Sustainable Development Goal 4 (SDG4) on education and lifelong learning. As mentioned on UNESCO’s website, literacy is “central to the creation of societies.”
