Students learn about the world of honeybees at the Aga Khan School, Osh
Grade 1 and 2 students at the Aga Khan School, Osh have been participating in several fun activities to learn about the importance of honeybees.
The primary grade teachers found fun and informative ways to engage the students about honeybees and the importance of the environment. The students learnt about honeybees’ habitats, colony demographics, pollination patterns and their significance in agriculture and human lives.
"There is one queen in each honeybee family who lays eggs for future worker bees, fulfilling all the work in the family,” said Naima Mahmudova, a Grade 2 student. “Bees… are very important to our planet, and we must take care of them."
The students’ research and learning were assessed by over 100 guests at the school’s STEAM Festival on 13 April, in which they put together an engaging performance and play-based presentation. The presentation dived into the world of honeybees, explaining their entire life cycle and what the students can do to make the environment sustainable for all creatures.
"It was an impressive and lovely performance,” said Irisov Askar Paizildaevich, a parent of a student. "I really enjoyed the children's presentation about the life of honeybees and how they produce honey. Amazing work done by the teachers in preparing the students for the performance! Everyone had adorable costumes and stories, like we were in the apiary. The children obtained strong knowledge of the life of honeybees and their role in our planet's ecosystem."
The Aga Khan School, Osh is one of the first schools in the city to initiate a set of activities aimed at raising awareness about the global ecological challenges the Earth is facing today. The school extends their way of learning and their experiences with neighbouring institutions through peer-to-peer approaches, as this issue requires a joint effort from everyone.
